Chúng ta hãy cùng khám phá Yên Bái để tìm hiểu một tập quán truyền thống độc đáo là lễ hội Xên Mường của đồng bào Thái ở Mường Lò, là phong tục lâu đời, nét đẹp văn hóa đáng tự hào đã được lưu giữ qua nhiều thế hệ.
Sự ra đời của lễ hội Xên Mường của đồng bào Thái – Mường Lò
Theo sự ghi chép của lịch sử dân tộc Thái còn giữ được đến ngày nay, lễ hội Xên Mường bắt đầu có từ thế kỷ XIII. Phong tục này được tổ chức hằng năm để bày tỏ lòng biết ơn, tưởng nhớ đến các vị thần linh đã khai sáng ra Mường (cách gọi tên vùng đất nơi mà người Thái đang sinh sống).
Đồng thời đây cũng là dịp để những người dân nơi đây cầu xin trời đất phù hộ cho cuộc sống bình yên, ban cho sự no ấm cho bản Mường: “Then trên trời phù hộ/Phù hộ dân trong bản mường/Phù hộ cả lũ trẻ đang lớn/Phù hộ cả người nhỏ mới sinh/Lá trên cây đừng rơi/Lá tre xanh đừng rụng/Cho tốt đẹp cả bản/An khang cả mường/Làm nương thành nương lúa bông dày/Làm ruộng thành ruộng tốt bông to… Thuận lợi khi làm đòng/Gặp may khi lúa trổ/ Mưa phùn khi ra bông/Lúa mẩy hạt gặp nắng/… Gánh về đổ bồ to đầy ắp/ Gánh về đổ bồ mường bồ bản đầy ngọn…”
Lễ hội độc đáo Xên Mường của người Thái diễn ra vào thời điểm hoa Ban Tây Bắc nở trắng núi rừng, thường vào tháng giếng hoặc tháng 2 âm lịch (tùy từng năm), trên nương rẫy lúa đang trổ bông xnh mơn mởn. Tuy rằng về cơ bản lễ hội Xên Mường đầu giống nhau nhưng mỗi vùng sẽ lại chọn địa điểm, cách thức tiến hành một số nghi lễ có chút khác nhau.
Trước đây người Thái thường tổ chức lễ hội Xên Mường trong các khu rừng cấm của người Mường, chọn nơi gốc đa to nhất, xung quanh thường là nơi yên nghỉ của những người đã khuất, còn nay lễ hội này được tổ chức ở khu vực chi nhánh bảo tàng Nghĩa Lộ, chọn nơi có chôn một cây cột bằng gỗ lõi sâu dưới lòng đất (gọi là cột đắc Mường), chính vì thế lễ hội thu hút khách du lịch Tây Bắc hơn, đồng thời du khách có thể hiểu hơn về phong tục tập quán của những người dân nơi đây.
Lễ hội Xên Mường diễn ra như thế nào
ở Mường Lò, ông Mo Nghè – người trông coi thần quyền cho chủ Mường và hội Phụ lão sẽ là người đứng ra chủ trì tổ chức lễ hội Xên Mường. Phần lễ hội bắt buộc phải có áo của con trai thuộc dòng dõi quý tộc gốc hay người đương chức để sử dụng làm vật tế. Ngày nay chức danh quý tộc không còn nữa, chính vì vậy đồng bào sẽ lấy áo của một vị lãnh đạo xã để làm vật tế. Các lễ vật khác trong lễ hội do người dân Mường đóng góp, có thể mổ từ 2 – 4 con trâu để làm lễ.
Trong lễ cúng Xên Mường, ngoài các lễ vật quen thuộc như vòng tay bạc, vòng cổ, vải thổ cẩm, vải sải thì còn có những món ăn được chế biến từ thịt trâu, không thể không nhắc đến là món thịt trâu gác bếp là món ẩm thực nổi tiếng và gắn với đồng bào nơi đây, thường một lễ cũng Xên Mường mổ hai con trâu hiến sinh, trong đó có 1 trâu đen và 1 trâu trắng.
Trong nghi thức cũng lễ, chủ Mường mặc áo màu đen, thầy mo Mường mặc áo dài màu đỏ, cúc đồng, cổ và tay áo viền vàng, xanh, đầu đội khăn dài màu đen. Đứng ở 2 bên ông mo là 2 người canh gác có đeo kếm, tay cầm thanh đao gỗ, còn các lãnh đạo của khu vực ngồi thành hai hàng để tập trung nghe nội dung bài cũng lễ cảm tạ quan thần và những người xưa.
Khi kết thúc phần cúng lế, thầy Mo sẽ mang 3 cây neo đi cắm ở 3 nơi giáp ranh với các Mường, mang ý nghĩa “nội bất xuất, ngoại bất nhập” trong vòng 3 ngày kể từ ngày làm lễ. Trong 3 ngày này, nếu những người con dân Mường khá đến chơi, đến có việc mà không được sự đồng ý của người trong Mường thì sẽ bị phạt lợn, phạt rượu.
Lúc thầy Mo cắm neo trở về, các chức sắc trong làng và bà con sẽ mở tiệc rượu linh đình với các món ngon của ẩm thực Tây Bắc truyền thống, lúc này ông Mo sẽ mang chiếc áo lúc trước làm vật tế đem trao trả lại cho chủ Mường, lấy sợi chỉ đen buộc vào tay chủ Mường để gửi gắm: “Chúc ông giữ dây mường đừng để mường vàng úa/Nắm dây mường đừng để mường tàn/Khỏe như nai đỏ/Chắc như voi đang độ”.
Kết thúc phần lễ nghi là đến phần “Hội” với sự tham gia của cả Mường, chính là phần được đón chờ nhất. Ông Quàn (là người liên lạc) sẽ đem trống, chiêng treo giữa một bãi đất trống rộng rãi để đánh trống khai mạc lễ hội. Trong phần hội này sẽ diễn ra những trò chơi dân gian tập thể như đua ngựa, tó tiếc, tó mắc lẹ, ném còn, bắn nỏ…
Những người dân khám phá Tây Bắc rất hứng thú và mong chờ được xem và tham gia phần lễ hội rất vui vẻ này, cùng tham gia vào các môn thể thao, trò chơi dân gian đậm sắc thái bản địa như là: chọi cù, ném còn, đi cà kheo, kéo co lý mường, leo cây (khửn may), hát đối đáp… cho chúng ta thấy được đời sống sinh hoạt vô cùng chan hòa phong phúc của người Thái ở khu vực Yên Bái.
